Unbelievable

Dear readers,

I must tell you that I am shocked by the recent negative attention this blog is getting. It seams that some Somali ladies need to grow up. I have had to take down the family pictures because of the negative comments. God forbid my children are discriminated against. My main goal for making this blog was to share some Somali recipes because I love the people and the culture. I never thought I'd have people making fun of my family and my food. I am disgusted with some of the childish behaviour I experienced.

I, in no way claim to be a professional cook or photographer. Please keep that in mind when you look at this blog. If you see something wrong then please, by all means tell me how to improve it.

Peace

sister please dont get upset because of some foolish comments,i think some behave that way because they are not content with themselves or they are jealous. And it would be very low to discriminate the children of one's own countrymen and brothers and sisters in islaam so everyone who does that i remind you to fear Allaah!

This is a wonderful blog and it has been very helpful for me during this Ramadhaan and im sure it has been so for so many others. So sister please keep up the good work insha a Allaah!

May Allaah swt protect you and your beautiful family, ameen.

  3. dear Tammy
i discovered this blog only recently and i was veeery happy because i have been searching for somalian recipes for sooo long and never found anything. i have seen the pictures of your family and i must say that you have five beautiful kids and you should proudly keep the pictures of them on your website. i am also married to a somalian man and have three lovely kids.
sorry to hear that you have had some negative comments. somalian food is really nice and somali ladies should be proud of that. i actually think that you are making quite a big thing by publishing these recipes, because you might be one of the first to do so. and not only that, but somalian food itself can now become more available to other people and they can appreciate its deliciousness. here in england somalian restaurants are visited only by somalian men and so other people do not even know what they are missing. i think they could make a good business by welcoming wider public.
personally, i am veeery greatful for what you are doing. i have young kids so i cannot spend hours watching somalian ladies when they are cooking, so having all the recipies written down and pictures with them, is muuuch more convenient for me. also i do not have to run to somebody every time i want to try out some new, especially if it is rather simple, recipe.
    thanks a lot

  5. Assalaamu alaykum, sister. I'm sorry that you have received negative comments about your food and especially about your family. People should realise that we are all Muslims and should avoid idle and offensive talk, especially in Ramadhan. You have a beautiful family, masha'Allah, and nobody has the right or responsibility to say anything bad about them. May Allah guide us all and may he protect your family, ameen.

  6. Asalaam Alaikum Sister,
I was so saddened to read that some people were writing hurtful comments on your blog. You are sharing your love of cooking with us and give some awesome ideas, mash'Allah. I can't believe some people would take a cooking blog so seriously. Everybody has their own interpretation of how to make a particular dish.
I love your blog and I hope that you continue to share with us the beautiful recipes. I am so sorry you were hurt. May Allah protect you and your family and keep up the amazing work. JazakAllah sister and a very early Eid Mubarak to you and your family.

  7. Assalamu alaykum sister,

I feel extremely saddened that you've received this negative attention, especially towards your children.
Masha'Allaah your doing a good job, and I'm realy impressed by your cooking. I am also married to a somali brother, and have 4 children alhamdulillaah. you've inspired me to try harder to learn how to cook this delicious food.
Masha'Allaah you have beautiful children, don't take notice of anyone who tries to put your family down, we will answer to Allaah.
    Tk care
    wa salaamu alaykum.

  8. Assalam Alaikum sister,

I would like to say that I am a somali lady and I was very impressed with your cooking recipes. May Allah SWT reward you for taking time out to teach and share your ideas.

Please disregard any negative comments you have experienced. Most likely, majority of them stem from insecurities. You have a beautiful Muslim family (mashaAllah) and anyone who expresses otherwise should fear ALLAH.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. Take care and continue doing what you do.

    Assalam Alaikum

  10. Asalam alaykoum rahemtullahi wa baraktuhu Tammy!
Astagfirallah that people have taken time out of their day to publicly write hurtful comments to you/about you and your family. Ensh'Allah let this be a reminder to us all on how NOT to behave at any time and a reminder to continue on the Straight Path to Allah SWT and love our borhters and sisters in Islam. Ensh'Allah you and your husband can continue to teach your children the correct manners in Islam and use these comments are examples of inappropriate behavior.
Oh Allah, the greatest, the most merciful! Please protect us and guide us on the straight path. We are here for you oh Allah. Ameen.

on another thought: I have only been able to try a few recipes so far and I have enjoyed them thoroughly! So jazzak Allah khairun for all you're doing for us who need some help in the kitchen :) Send salams to your children from me.

  11. Assalaamu Alaikum,
This is one of those moments when I accidently discover something great, but unexpected, on the Internet. I was searching for something completely unrelated when a link on a wordpress blog led me here. What a cool blog! I'm a Somali, but a novice cook for the most part. Even the most common dishes, like sabaayad, are somewhat intimidating for me. These kinds of recipes are just what I need to get started. I look forward to experimenting with them, insha'Allah. JazakaAllahu khair Tammy. I wish you and your family a blessed Ramadan.

  16. Assalaam Walaikum,

First, I want to give thanks to you and ask Allah to grant you barakat for all the work that you do to promote greater understanding of Somali culture and the people through food. While some may not appreciate your efforts, wAllahi I do.
I like you, am not Somali. I am an American Muslim (though am always mistaken for Somali) who loves with the utmost esteem and vivacity the people of Somalia, their culture and their food. This love and esteem has guided my career goals as I am a university student researching Somalia, its culture, and inshaAllah, reshaping the discourse around Somalia and the political affects of hardliner policies to this beautiful Muslim community.
But, this is not why I am greatful to you. I fancy myself a bit of a cook. And while I have avidly searched for recipes of Somali food throughout the web, stores, and through my extended Somali family, I have yet to have found any clear, comprehensive, and thorough site dedicated purely to the food and cuisine of Somalia. While my taste buds lead me to be able to decipher many of the ingredients, many more are left to the imagination. Furthermore, the styles that you utilize as a practitioner, truly helps. Evidence of this, is seen by the various Somali friend that I have feeling right at home whenever they come my place for dinner. This is due largely to your assistance.
I can not tell you how helpul you have been in both helping me to have a starting point to creating my own recipes, complimenting yours, and impressing my friends and their families. I have just found this site two weeks ago (after 3 years of searching) and have made 2 weeks of Somali food. JazakAllahu Khayr.
So, while many are unappreciative of your efforts, know that there are many more who are. May Allah Reward you and grant you Jennah for your efforts in making a people truly misunderstood, unappreciated, and criminalized by the international community, via your compliments and highlights of their rich cuisines.

I know it has already been said many times here, but that sucks that you received negative comments. Maybe your recipes aren't EXACTLY how they do it, but who really cares in the end? If they are that concerned, they should make their own blog, or try to correct you.

Anyway, I don't know how long I searched to actually find more than one Somali recipe on a single page. Jazak'Allahu khair for taking the time to post this. Masha'Allah, it brings tears to my eyes wallah that people would dare insult you. You seem like a beautiful person masha'Allah.

Take care, and say a prayer for those Somali ladies, and in sha'Allah you will get ajr from Allah ta'ala.
