Today's Menu

This yummy dish is made with TONS of onions, juicy ripe tomatoes, and beef. I served it on top of boiled eggs. This is the perfect dish. You can serve it with anjera or you can serve over pasta. (Now you know what we will be having tomorrow.

I also served this with a veggie salad. I cut up sweet peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes and mixed it with a cilantro and olive oil dressing.

Before I forget...This needs to be served with bananas. BANANAS!!! You might think I am totally nuts. But believe it or not Somalis eat bananas at almost every meal. Not as a dessert, but with the actual meal. My husband will take a piece of anjera and dip it into the sauce, he will then take a piece of banana and eat it.

  1. Assalaamu Alaikum sister!

I just found your blog through another blog.
We have so much in common I think, I've been married with my somalian hubby for almost 13 years now and we have also 5 children, Alhamdulillah. We live in Finland at the moment.
Many of those dishes are familiar to me but it's nice to see how others make different variations of them.
There is no shortcut in halwomaking I think, you just learn it through expierience. I think everyone has expierienced the same difficulties with halwomaking that you told. And actually, my hubby told me that in Somalia usually halwomakers are men (it demands big muscles you know).
I'm sorry to hear about backbiting and negative comments from some somalian, but actually I'm not surprised at all.
Fee aman Allah, your sister Maryam

I think it's great to see how manny variations there are of somali recipes.... I make this dish very often with muufo or anjerra but i never make it with fresh tomatoes i always use peeled tomatoes in a can and tons of unions..I also use butter to fry off the unions...I saw your blog on Halwa making i have a great Halwa recipe that never fails..I make it all the time with ramadaan Eid....

  6. Haha! I've heard about the Somali obsession with bananas. I always joke with my Somali friends/associates about it. :)

Love the blog,Allaahumma baarak feek! Masha'Allaah bananas do go well with the rice, the kids like it, but suprisingly my husband doesn't have it that often with his meal.
